Lexapro (Escitalopram) is an antidepressant drug. It is referred to as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Lexapro is used for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults and adolescents of 12 to 17 years of age. A major depressive episode implies a prominent and persistent depressed mood that normally interferes with daily functioning. This includes symptoms like depressed mood, loss of interest in usual activities, change in weight or apetite, insomnia, psychomotor retardation, fatigue, feeling of guilt, impaired concentration and suicidal thoughts.
Despite the similarity of Escitalopram and Citalopram, preclinical as well as various clinical studies have shown differentiated effects of Citalopram and Escitalopram as well as a clinical superiority compared with a variety of other SSRIs, such as Paroxetine especially in severely depressed patients.
